Below is a video interview with David Hockney. Along with the video, I've posted images of the two works of art that are mentioned in the video. Both are very influential and historically important pieces.
I think he was saying that although the photomontage looks as though all of the photographs where taken from one vantage point, he actually moved around the area a lot to snap the photos. But, as he worked, he realized that he had to get a sense in his mind of how the finished piece was going to look so that he could plan out where to point his camera next.
